Comparative Search Reveals the Tradeoff between Eye Movements and Working Memory Use in Visual Tasks

چکیده
The experiments reported here provide an insight into how the use of working memory is influenced when eye movements become ‘costlier’ in a visual task. In our comparative search paradigm, each half of the screen contains a column of simple geometrical objects of three sizes and forms. Participants have to detect whether the two halves of the screen are exactly identical or contain a difference. The eye movement data recorded from two experiments provides evidence for a working memory versus eye movement tradeoff. Visual working memory use – within capacity limits is flexibly adapted to optimize task performance for varying costs of eye

P58: Visual Working Memory Performance Based on Saccades in Children with and without Specific Learning Disorder: An Eye-Tracking Study
Some of the previous studies show that children with SLD have deficits in visual processing and working memory. Hence, the aim of this research was to investigate problems of visual working memory based on behavioral neuroscience method, using an eye tracker device. The method of present study was ex-post facto study. The participants included couple of twelve children with SLD (mean age=10.92)...
متن کاملHow memory mechanisms are a key component in the guidance of our eye movements: evidence from the global effect.
Investigating eye movements has been a promising approach to uncover the role of visual working memory in early attentional processes. Prior research has already demonstrated that eye movements in search tasks are more easily drawn toward stimuli that show similarities to working memory content, as compared with neutral stimuli. Previous saccade tasks, however, have always required a selection ...
متن کاملVisual working memory modulates rapid eye movements to simple onset targets.
Representations in visual working memory (VWM) influence attention and gaze control in complex tasks, such as visual search, that require top-down selection to resolve stimulus competition. VWM and visual attention clearly interact, but the mechanism of that interaction is not well understood. In the research reported here, we demonstrated that in the absence of stimulus competition or goal-lev...
متن کاملDetermining a Correlation Between Individual Differences In Eye Movements and Working Memory
This study determined if a relationship exists between individual differences in eye movements and working memory measures. The eye movement system can provide insight into processes that occur in the mind as well as a better understanding of the relationship between quantifiable aspects of eye movements and the more abstract inner workings of the mind. Recently, consistent and reliable individ...
متن کاملWorking Memory Deficits and its Relationship to Autism Spectrum Disorders
Background: There is a wealth of research done in developed countries on the investigation of the working memory (WM) performance in people with high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) (IQ>70), with different reported findings. There is a dearth of similar studies in developing countries. In addition, the findings suggest that WM is possibly influenced by culture. The present study inv...
